Mid-August delivered the year's biggest application-layer deal report, a billion-user milestone, and an open agentic model that runs on one consumer GPU.
Stripe reportedly acquires OpenRouter
On August 16, Bloomberg reported (Stripe declined to comment) that Stripe has finalized a deal to acquire OpenRouter — the unified API gateway to 400+ AI models, with roughly 8 million users — for more than $7B, about 5.4× the $1.3B valuation from OpenRouter's Series B just three months earlier. If confirmed, it's the largest application-layer consolidation of the year: payments infrastructure absorbing model routing, a bet that AI access is becoming a metered utility.
Cognition in talks at $40B+
On August 12, Bloomberg reported that Cognition — maker of coding agent Devin and, since last month, the Poke assistant — is in early talks to raise $1B+ at a $40B+ valuation, a more than 50% jump from the $26B it hit less than three months earlier, with annualized revenue approaching $1B. Talks are early and terms could change, but it's the clearest price signal yet that agentic coding is the hottest category at the application layer.
Gemini joins the billion-user club
On August 11, Sundar Pichai announced the Gemini app crossed 1 billion monthly active users — Google's fastest-growing product ever, up from 400M MAU in May 2025. The app now generates 150M+ images a day, and 63% of users interact by voice. With ChatGPT having hit 1B MAU in June, the consumer assistant race is officially a two-horse, billion-user contest — see the chat assistants board.
Model watch: Meta's Muse Glimmer and a gated cyber model
On August 10, Meta released Muse Glimmer, a 30B-parameter Apache 2.0 open-weights model distilled from the closed Muse Spark and built for multi-step agentic workflows — tool use, coding, file handling — that runs offline on a single consumer GPU, a direct challenge to cloud-only agent platforms. The same day, OpenAI expanded its Daybreak cyber-defense program and launched GPT-5.6 Cyber, a security model restricted to vetted partners — the first frontier lab to sell a gated, offense-capable model as a service tier.
What it means if you're picking tools
Two structural shifts to watch: model access is consolidating into infrastructure (Stripe/OpenRouter), and regulation is reshaping output itself — on August 11 Anthropic said its models will automatically watermark generated text and files (via C2PA) to comply with the EU AI Act's Transparency Code, with other major labs making similar commitments. Add OpenAI completing a ~$7B employee tender at an $852B valuation (August 10) ahead of a potential IPO, and the application layer keeps getting more corporate. Your chat assistant and automation picks are increasingly backed by billion-user, trillion-dollar-track companies — vote for the ones still earning it.
